Puputan Square Denpasar
Puputan Square (Lapangan Puputan Badung) sits in the heart of Denpasar, about 16 kilometers northeast of the airport. Right across the square you can find the Bali Museum.
Puputan Square is a beautiful monument that serves as a resting area away from the city's bustle and commotion. It is a lush, peaceful area in the middle of the city. You will find yourself in a beautiful green garden where many locals are taking a break from work or families spending some quality time together. Children often meet here to fly the traditional kites. Around the garden you have some food stalls which offer, for example Satay, Corn and other snacks.
The king of Badung, faced with ferocious resistance from Dutch colonial forces, led his court in committing suicide. That’s why the Puputan monument shows a family of three about to perform Puputan, a Balinese term which means ‘to end’, a ritual suicide when confronted with surrendering to the enemy. The main aim of the statue is to commemorate the victims of the shooting by Dutch colonizers in 1906, by depicting a local Balinese family brandishing their weapons against the Dutch forces.
There is no charge to visit Puputan Square, but you may have to pay a parking fee of about 2,000-5,000 IDR. The square is especially active on weekends, when residents of Denpasar gather there. Most tourists visit the square on a Denpasar city tour. In general you can visit the monument pretty much any time during the day.
The Puputan mass suicide is an important event in the history of both Denpasar and Bali as a whole, so history buffs do not want to miss the Puputan square. History buffs don’t want to miss the Puputan square, since the Puputan mass suicide is a significant moment in Denpasar's history as well as the history of Bali as a whole.
