Bajra Sandhi Museum
The monument is situated in Denpasar in front of the Bali Governor's Office. The monument was built in 1987, inaugurated by president Megawati Sukarnoputri on June 14, 2003. Bajra Sandhi Monument is a historical memorial to the Balinese people's fight for independence from Dutch colonialism.
The Bajra Sandhi Monument is easily accessible and lies on the main road in a strategic area, which is set right in the centre of the Renon Square. It is standing up in the middle of Denpasar town, flat green lawns, gardens and palms of the square.
The monument was originally built in 1987 and opened to the public in 2003. It stands to represent a long history of struggle of the Balinese people, namely the invasion of the Dutch in 1906 and 1908. The invasions saw the deaths of over 1,000 Balinese people, many of whom were civilians, including the Balinese rulers of Badung and Tabanan. The purpose of the statue now is to devote the soul and spirit of Balinese people's struggle as well as digging, maintaining, developing and preserving Balinese cultures.
The monument is actually closely connected to Hindu philosophies and independence symbols. It’s grand structure for example resembles a Balinese Hindu priest’s praying bell, or ‘bajra’. It is build in a rectangular shape, and follows the architectural principles of the "Tri Mandala." The main building, the Utama Mandala, has three floors. The ground floor, Nistaning Utama Mandala, contains administrative rooms, a library, and exhibition halls. The second floor is a meditative space which provides a panoramic view of Denpasar. Take the spiral stairs to the top and therefore the third floor, for 360-degree views.
Moreover, you can visit the 3D Museum which shows various historical dioramas of the people’s past struggle for Independence. To get the best shots you can visit the make up studio next to the museum.
Close to the museum you will find stalls to buy food and beverages and last but not least a store to buy souvenirs. Furthermore, you will find free Wifi and Air Conditioner in all floors.
The entrance fee is IDR 50, whereas it’s open everyday from 8am to 6pm.
