Lempuyang Luhur Temple
Lempuyang Luhur Temple is located in eastern part of Bali Island. It is precisely in Purahayu Village, Abang Sub-district, Karangasem. On the Gamongan Hill or Bisbis Hill or Kembar Hill stood silently Lempuyang Luhur Temple. According to the book of Upadesa, this temple is one of Sad Kahyangan Temples in Bali, the place for worshipping God in his manifestation as Sang Hyang Iswara.
It is to worship God as Sang Hyang Iswara, as a guardian of the east direction—from where the sun rises. The sun god also called Goddess Savita or Goddess Savitri. The worship to Sang Hyang Iswara is to lead ourselves in order to get the light of revelation (jyotir).
As stated in the Brhad Aranyaka Upanisad's 1.3,28 above that with the pure light called jyotir, we will release our soul from darkness which is called tamasa. From the jyotir or bright soul, we are free from spiritual death heading to true life called amrtam.
Lemputang Luhur Temple and another Sad Kahyangan Temple were established in the 11th century while Mpu Kuturan accompanied King Udaya along with his queen ruled Bali. Sad Kahyangano Temple was built to protect Bali so that its people remain doing things justified based on religious teaching.
On palm leaf manuscripts Kuntara Dewa Purana Bangsul it was stated that Sang Hyang Prameswara carried the mountains existing in Bali from Jambhudwipa (India), from Mount Mahameru. Piece of Mount Mahameru was brought to Bali and broken down into three large parts and small ones as well. Its middle part formed ad Mount Batur and Mount Rinjani, whereas its top became Mount Agung.
The smaller pieces became a row of Bali's mountains that are connected each other. Those mountains such as Mount Tapsahi, Pengelengan, Siladnyana, Beratan, Batukaru, Nagaloka, Pulaki, Puncak Sangkur, Bukit Rangda, Trate Bang, Padang Dewa, Andhakasa, Uluwatu, Sraya and Mount Lempuhyang. In Old Javanese Language Lempuhyang means "gamongan". This mountains row which surrounds Bali Island carried by Sang Hyang Prameswara was intended as a stana of divine-manifested Gods for protecting Bali.
On the palm leaf manuscript, Kutara Kanda Dewaa Purana Bangsul is also written that Sang Parameswara assigned his son Sang Hyang Agnijayasakti to come down to Bali and to keep Bali in prosperity and to reside in Mount Lempuhyang or Mount Gamorangan with other gods.
In the inscription Sading C in the year of 1072 of the Saka Era, it was revealed that Mount Lempuhyang is also named Mount Adri Karang. Here, on Mount Adri Karang, King Jayasakti did meditation, for that reason the mountain is also named Karangsemadi. King Jayasakti was ordered by his father Sang Hyang Guru to come down to Bali for building temple to [be] make it a safe and prosperous place. King Jayasakti invited the priests and assistants as well the people to carry out Sang Hyang Guru's command to build Bali starting with temple construction on Mount Lempuhyang as a place of worship God as [incarnation of] Sang Hyang Iswara. King Jayasakti previously did meditation as the initial step in building secure and prosperous life in Bali.
In Wrehaspati Tattawa, it was stated that citta or the realm of thought has four forces, namely dharma, jnyana, variragia, and aiswaria. So, aiswaria is one of the forces that continuously pushes the conscience of human being to increase self-revelation as the pure light guiding life to the purer in manifesting the truth and harmony. As the result, Iswara often defined as a leader.
Ideally, the clear mind is like the light that illuminated human life so that they can overcome the darkness within their heart. Therefore, in Besakih Temple, there is Dark Temple to worship Sang Hyang Iswara in the east of Penataran Agung Besakih Temple. The word "dark" or "sheen" in Old Javanese Language means the light. It doesn't mean dark as like in Indonesian language. It is therefore from this Lempuyang Temple, King Jayasakti get a bright spiritual light to rule in Bali along with his assistances and people with the grace of God through his manifestation as Sang Hyang Iswara, preserver, and guardian of the east.
From this Lempuyang Temple, the light of religious leadership came out to illuminate body and soul of Balinese people in making their dreams come true, building the secure and prosperous Bali.
