Bali Museum
The Bali Museum is located in the heart of Bali – Denpasar City, approximately a 45 minute drive from the international airport Ngurah Rai. Right across you can find the central square Lapangan Puputan.
It was built in 1931 by architect P. J. Moojen. Back then, it has been used as a photo spot by Balinese teenagers. By the years it was also used for temporal exhibitions, night markets and other culture related activities.
The creation of the Building in 1910 brought the concept to life. Several architects, including I Gusti Gede Ketut Kandel and I Gusti Ketut Rai from Banjar Abasan, were involved in the design of this structure. The kings of Buleleng, Badung, Tabanan, and Karangasem provided the money and materials for the museum's construction.
Today Bali Museum holds various relics of human past and ethnography. It has a collection of objects that reflect the existence and development of Balinese culture from the past to modern times.
Human civilizations from every epoch, particularly the Balinese civilisation, are represented in the collections of the Bali Museum, also known as the Bali Provincial State Museum. Among the collections are items from ancient times, works of art, and cultural objects.
There are four main buildings inside the museum: Gedung Buleleng with textiles inside, Gedung Karangasem displaying sculptures and paintings, Gedung Tabanan showing theatrical masks and instruments and last but not least Gedung Timur which shows archeological findings. Moreover, you will see the Agnung Jagstnatha Temple, which is the largest temple in the island’s capital and is an iconic landmark.
The gallery is managed by Bali local government. You can visit the museum Monday to Sunday from 7:30 am until 3:30pm. The entrance fee is IDR 50.000 which is about $3,50.
The Bali Museum is definitely worth a trip, because besides art collection and Bali history, you will also see a beautiful garden and an unique Balinese architecture. Tripadvisor rates the museum with 4 out of 5 points.
